Ancient City of Aspendos
Located in the Serik district of Antalya, near the Köprüçay River, the Ancient City of Aspendos is an important Roman-era heritage site, world-famous for its exceptionally well-preserved theatre. Built in the 2nd century AD, this structure stands out as one of the finest examples of ancient engineering, with a seating capacity of approximately 15,000 people and a stage building that has remained largely intact to the present day.
Thanks to its remarkable acoustics, even the faintest sounds can be clearly heard from the upper rows, making it a living venue suitable for concerts and stage performances even today. Not only the theatre but also the long aqueducts built to supply water to the city demonstrate the advanced engineering knowledge of the period.
Spread over a wide area, the settlement includes an agora, basilica, and various public buildings, making Aspendos not just a theatre complex but a full-scale ancient city center. Walking here today, it is still possible to clearly sense how Roman aesthetic values and engineering expertise came together in harmony.
